Downtown Bend has uncorked numerous spots to sample great wines from around the world. In addition to the established spots, at the corner of Colorado Avenue and Bond Street—oenophiles can now also choose between the Volcano Wine Company and the Wine Shop and Tasting Bar, both on Brooks Street facing Mirror Pond. Melanie Betti, a former graphic designer, offers vintages from the Northwest and California, with racks dedicated to Italian, French, Spanish, South American, Australian and New Zealand wines. Betti urges customers to “come and hang out,” especially on Friday nights, when $15 buys tastes of six wines, plus hors d’oeuvres. A $50 annual membership in the ’50s Club earns free admission to evening events plus discounts of 10 to 15 percent on wines.
