BALTAZAR’S

Mexican Seafood. $$
Mazatlán native Baltazar Chavez, owner of El Pescador in Sunriver, has added a coastal Mexican touch to Bend’s westside. The menu features a seafood molcajete: lobster, prawns and a choice of carne asada or New York steak, with grilled cactus, scallions, cheese, black beans and costeño rice in a butter-based sauce. Seasonal margaritas are a mainstay of the bar.

LA ROSA

Mexican. $
Located off Newport Avenue near Central Oregon Community College, La Rosa serves some of Bend’s most authentic Jaliscan regional cuisine, culled from old family recipes. High marks go to the tamales and the seafood enchiladas. Service is friendly, atmosphere colorful, margaritas more than ample.

EL CAPORAL | EL JIMADOR

Mexican. $
El Caporal has a Latin-food empire: three restaurants as well as El Jimador. The menu is standard, with the usual tacos, burritos and enchiladas; the chicken mole recipe is especially good, and the selection of tequilas may be Bend’s best. Don’t miss the tortilla soup or the people-watching at El Jimador.

PARRILLA GRILL

International. $
A west-side neighborhood hangout at the Galveston Avenue roundabout, this little café has plenty of Mexican-style dishes as well as pasta, jambalaya and such “global wraps” as the Bombay Bomburrito, with a ginger-banana chutney. The Parrilla is active in Commute Options activities and provides a showcase for local musicians.

LONGBOARD LOUIE’S

Mexican-American. ¢-$
Baja-style fish (halibut and salmon) tacos and classic breakfast burritos (try the chorizo) are what keep students and gearheads coming back to this casual joint with the flavors of Hawaii and Mexico. The wraparound patio fills up quickly in summer.

PEPE’S

Mexican. $
The white house on the east side of Highway 97 in downtown Madras is home to Pepe’s Mexican Bakery & Restaurant, one of the most authentic south-of-the-border eateries in Central Oregon. If you don’t have time to sit for a meal, grab a burrito to go.
